Old Indian

This is a work in progress, as I come across obits, and walk the cemetery, I add to the list.  Check back often, or if you have a name to add please email me.

History: The earliest record is a tax assessment record from 1876, Bear Creek Township, which gives the name of John B. SHAGONABY as payee of the taxes on the 38 acre parcel. The next record is also a tax assessment record from 1878, Bear Creek Township, when QUAYSHAYSNOQUAY paid the taxes. This same person, (albeit the name terribly misspelled), appears as the first landowner out of federal holding as an allotment per the treaty of 1855 and recorded 13 January 1872. Then, in 1882, a priest by the name of Phillip ZORN, paid taxes from 1882-1884 and purchased property for an Indian Church. The church was never built and the property is now a Catholic Cemetery- predominantly an Indian burial place but rarely used. A few markers remain on the steep hillside which is located on Old U.S. 31 between Horton Bay and Bay Shore in Emmet County, MI. Starting in 1882, the parcel is much smaller, 16 acres which roughly corresponds to the present day configuration. This cemetery became part of Resort Twp. in 1897. It was Bear Creek Twp prior to this date.
